It is the time of the month to start perking up your ears for next month’s First Thursday events. The first thing to land in my inbox was the Forum Lounge event that happens monthly at the Contemporary Arts Forum. This month’s event features the second dose of animated music videos brought to you by Ted Mills. I have to admit that I did not see the first installment, but I did hear rave reviews and am making this my top priority for January’s First Thursday. I was also very happy to see that there will be two performances, one at 7pm and the other at 8pm. Making it easier to catch the event without sacrificing so much of the short First Thursday evening to one location.

I’ve posted the details below and hope to see a huge crowd at CAF next Thursday.

THUR. JAN. 7, 7 PM & 8:15 PM
Forum Lounge: The Amazing Animated Jukebox Vol. 2
Remember The Amazing Animated Jukebox Vol. 1? Tune in for Vol. 2 packed chock full of wicked awesome animated tracks compiled by Ted Mills! Starts at 7 PM sharp and rewinds for a second time at 8:15 PM!

Kick the New Year off right with the second installment of the Amazing Animated Jukebox. Curated by local filmmaker and writer Ted Mills, the Amazing Animated Jukebox Vol. 2 screens videos from Coldplay, Beck, Radiohead, Menomena, N.A.S.A. featuring Kool Keith and Tom Waits, Death Cab for Cutie, Birdy Nam Nam, Lemon Jelly, Royksopp, Azeem, The New Pornographers, and many more. Don’t miss your fix of the latest wave in animated eye candy ranging from old-school 2-D line drawing to computer graphics and those that negotiate the subtle levels in between!

On Facebook this morning, influential and eloquent New York art critic, Jerry Saltz asked his friends and fans to post their artists statements on his facebook page where he would provide feedback. There are already around 100 comments posted, so it is probably too late for you to get much feedback on your own artist statement, but that doesn’t mean you can’t learn a ton by seeing what he says about others. This is an incredible opportunity to get inside the brain of one of this country’s most important art writers.

Check it out: here.

Quote from Saltz’s facebook page:

“An experiment. Post yr. Artist Statement in the Comment. We (I) will read it and delete everything that strikes us as either empty, platitudinous, cliched, boring etc.(for suggested rules of writing artist statements see the below thread of 12-24-09). Now go ahead make our day.”

SBArtsCollaborativeFirst Thursday and SBAC – Art Exhibit in Casa De la Guerra

Calling all Artists!  It’s that time again!  With the holidays coming, we’d better start getting organized for the January First Thursday Exhibit.  This is a phenomenal opportunity for local artists and musicians to showcase their talent on 1st Thursday in the beautiful downtown courtyard of Casa de la Guerra.  In what is becoming an ongoing series, this is a great collaboration between the Santa Barbara Arts Collaborative, Santa Barbara County Arts Commission, The Downtown Organization of Santa Barbara and the Santa Barbara Trust for Historical Preservation.
The details:
Date: January 7, 2010

Location: Casa De la Guerra Courtyard, 15 East De la Guerra Street
Time:
Set up 4:30PM to 5:00PM, Exhibit 500PM – 8:00PM, Take Down 8:00PM – 8:30PM

This is a showcase exhibit so there is no selling on site at this time.  Bring plenty of business cards and literature.  Each exhibitor is responsible for their own displays like portable walls & pedestals.  We will have access to electricity but bring your own lighting, and bring an extension cord or two.

The allocated space for each exhibitor is 10′ x 10′.  The exhibit is open to 2D and 3D Visual Artists and Musicians.

Go to our website for more information www.sbartscollaborative.org.

Special thanks to Artist and SB Arts Collaborator, Joe LaCorte, for spearheading this effort.  He wanted everyone to know that he’d still like to hear from musicians who would like to participate.  If you have any questions, his email isinfo@josephlacorte.com. Grant Update

We’ve been hard at work getting organized for the grant application process which will be launched in January.  Our next general meeting will also serve as a grants workshop and we’ll be announcing that date soon.

A reminder that the entire grants process will be conducted through our website, so make sure you register.  We’re up to 234 registered members, still wondering who’ll be lucky #250.

Please visit our site www.sbartscollaborative.org, and click on “Create an account.” It’ll take about 2 minutes.

Ian Shive, conservation photographer and author of the new book, THE NATIONAL PARK OUR AMERICAN LANDSCAPE will be in Santa Barbara this weekend, Friday, December 11th speaking at Santa Barbara Outfitters and signing at Barnes and Noble Saturday, December 12th, 2PM to sign his book. The book features amazing photographs of the Channel Islands. Check out his website to get a preview of these stunning photographs.

Shive has worked in a variety of media towards the cause of nature conservation, and as a devoted nature-lover myself, I appreciate his use of the creative arts toward such a noble goal. At the age of 31, Shive has already had a very prolific and varied career, and from the looks of it he’ll have a long career ahead of him as well. To learn more about Ian Shive you can read his bio here.

Make sure to come by one of the two local stops on his book tour to hear about the creation of the book, get a copy, and have it signed by the author.
