I suppose it is only natural that we go weeks without a big art event in town and then you have 20 in one week. This particular week is one of the latter, with the following two events on Wednesday. Then a great big holiday 1st Thursday the next day (more on that to come soon). And then Friday is Brad Nack’s annual Reindeer Show at Roy (more to come on that as well). Might I make a plea to those in control for spreading things out throughout the month, I’m just saying… I’d really like to make it to attend all these events (just look at these pots!), but a guy can only do so much.

ECAA AND CABANA HOME ANNOUNCES AN EXHIBITION OF NOTED POTTER:

Adam Silverman: New Pots

November 30, 2011 to January 14, 2012

Artist Talk and Opening Reception
to follow:

This Wednesday, November 30
6-8pm
CABANA HOME
Santa Barbara, CA 93101
111 Santa Barbara Street

Cabana Home, in collaboration with Edward Cella Art + Architecture, announces a solo exhibition for noted contemporary Los Angeles based potter, Adam Silverman. The exhibition presents a new collection of hand thrown pots with explosive, experimental glazes that epitomizes Silverman’s distinctive aesthetic connecting ancient and modern sensibilities.

The deceptively and modestly, self-described potter is widely recognized for his experimental glazes that are developed and refined through a series of extensive tests. Each pot is enveloped by richly glazed textures of ashy scars and mottled lava-like surfaces. In some cases, Silverman grinds down their surfaces to expose the bubbles and lacy patterns underneath revealing the chemical process of fire reacting to the minerality of the glazes and clay. This new body of work engages the viewer through an experimental journey of process and time, trekking through traditional and personal, improvisational techniques that are a counterpoint with the vessel’s highly considered, modernist inspired silhouettes. Each work bridges the past and present simultaneously in one artefact.

Trained as an architect, Silverman is currently the studio director of Heath Ceramics, a 62 year old California maker of dinnerware and tile. Just this fall alone, Silverman was engaged by the Santa Monica Museum of Art to design the installation for the retrospective of iconic Ojai resident and ceramicist, Beatrice Wood: Career Woman. Additionally, Silverman was commissioned by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art to create a limited edition, commemorative vessel celebrating the museum’s Pacific Standard Time exhibition California Design, 1930-1965: “Living in a Modern Way.”

Historically, I have limited these postings to events that are happening locally, and I plan on continuing that trend. However, The Mural Project, which aims to take place globally, is rooted here in Santa Barbara and that’s good enough for me. The website for the Mural Project also hosts a series of biographies on artists from the City College’s Adult Education program. Check it out here.

The Mural Project is a multinational social empowerment project, using the Arts as a therapeutic enrichment tool. Chantal Peterson and Marianne Romeo will work with different women’s and children’s organizations to co-create murals in their communities. The purpose of The Mural Project is to create a space of collaboration and expression in which the artists involved share their stories with the extended community, take ownership of their experiences with the added potential to expand/exercise artistic skill. We have chosen to work with women and children as these are groups most marginalized in economically disadvantaged populations and are statistically most vulnerable to changing economic and environmental circumstances.

I’m really looking forward to this clever exhibition. This is a really interesting and eclectic group of artists brought together not through academic theme or stylistic similarities, but by their commonality as artist married to artists. It will be exciting to see what curator Nancy Gifford (an excellent artist in her own right) brings from this group.

Come hang out at The Arts Fund in the Funk Zone this Saturday from 5 – 7. And might I suggest La Tour for after-reception drinks?

See you there.

First Thursday is now only two days away. With Halloween behind me I can finally start to focus on this month’s offerings. November is music month in Santa Barbara, highlighted by the New Noise Music Conference and Festival, which brings in a bunch of great bands and music professionals.

One of my favorite parts of this festival is “Pianos on State“.  Throughout the week pianos will be placed at strategic locations on State Street for anyone to use. These pianos have been decorated by local artists and have an uncanny ability to spawn serendipitous moments of audio bliss. It is not uncommon to see bands that played at SOHO or Velvet Jones the night before, jamming on one of these pianos the following afternoon.

Another music related 1st Thursday event will be taking place at Santa Barbara Sheet Music (1036 Santa Barbara St.). This will be their first time putting on an event during 1st Thursday and you can expect live music from a variety of different groups and a suite of work by local artists on the wall. I will admit, I’ve never been to Santa Barbara Sheet music, but I have intrigued by the place for a long time and I’m glad I finally have a proper excuse to go up and check the place out.

You will find more information on both events below.

Music to your ears” Anyone can play and all are encouraged to listen!

Pianos on StatePianos on State, a collaborative and interactive musical experience coinciding with the 2011 New Noise Festival (www.newnoisesb.org), kicks off downtown during First Thursday November 3rd. Sponsored in part by Santa Barbara Beautiful and Cox Communications, this is the second annual event made possible by the collaborative efforts of the Santa Barbara Bowl, Notes for Notes, Santa Barbara Education Foundation, Santa Barbara Arts Collaborative, Santa Barbara County Arts Commission, and New Noise Festival Nov. 3-6. Each piano will become its own piece of art as local professional Santa Barbara artists create unique looks. Pianos will be available for musical exploration, impromptu play and planned performances morning, afternoon and evening over two weekends (10am – 9pm per piano). Amateur and professional musicians alike will be scheduled to perform and the public is invited to sit down and play during non-scheduled hours.

Santa Barbara Sheet Music is holding its first monthly Music & Art event this Thursday, November 3rd, from 6 – 8pm, put on by its new staff and owners!
The store is upstairs at 1036 Santa Barbara Street, at Figueroa.
Live music will be performed on the balcony, featuring guitarist Kenny Sultan, as well as local established, and student musicians.
Work from favorite local artists, Alvaro Suman, Andrea Sanchez, and Molly Hahn, will be gracing the walls, to be enjoyed all month long.

New store manager, Kristen Reed, comes to us by way of New York and Paris, to breathe some new life into a business that has been a fixture in our community for over forty years.  “I see a great opportunity here to reach out, support, and encourage the next generation of musicians here in Santa Barbara. With all that this community does for its music and art organizations, we can’t help but want to be a part of it!”

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:

Alvaro Suman -
“Alvaro has exhibited his work in the Museum of Modern Art in Mexico City; Cuernavaca, Mexico; Casa de la Raza, Santa Barbara; Los Angeles Art Museum; San Francisco Art Museum; among others. Alvaro’s art reflects a style that varies from magical realism to fantastic surrealism and one can clearly see his indigenous Mexican background.”

Andrea Sanchez -
A native of New Mexico and graduate of Arizona State with a Bachelor’s of Fine Art in painting and drawing, Andrea Sanchez, regularly exhibits all over Santa Barbara.  She says about her process, “For me, the intention behind painting is vital, my goal is to create artwork that is beyond myself, while searching for truths in this world and my own life.”

Molly Hahn -
Mollycules™ is the brainchild of multimedia artist Molly Hahn.

Molly is the illustrator & author of the children’s books, “All the Things I Can Do!” and ”Under the Sneep Tree: The Wamboozling of a Village“. She has been teaching illustration, cartooning, and animation workshops to elementary schools since 2004 and has over six years of professional experience working as an illustrator and designer.  2010 Recipient of the SCWBI Regional Grant (Santa Barbara/Ventura).  Molly’s next children’s book, “Izzy’s Ukulele Adventure”, will be released December 5th.

The crew from the Anderson family are providing another reason to head down to Carpinteria. Ron Anderson is quite a bit more established than the artists I usually highlight on this blog (see below), but I’m such a big fan of the what the Andersons are doing down in Carp, that I want to give them all the support I can. As per usual with shows at the Anderson Art Collective, portions of the proceeds from sales go to help a non-profit organization. This time it is the Santa Barbara Channelkeeper to support their work in protecting and restoring the Santa Barbara Channel. For all the information and details on the opening reception, keep reading.

Ron Anderson 20/20: Looking Forward, Looking Back

Carpinteria, CA – Anderson Art Collective’s (www.andersonARTcollective.com) next show, Ron Anderson 20/20 will open with an artist’s reception on Saturday, November 5 from 5-7pm, with live music, food and drinks and features selections of the artist’s work from his first show in Beverly Hills in 1991 through his newest creations in 2011.  The show includes his iconic 3D mixed media woodies and water fountains, oil paintings, his Kahala aloha shirt designs and a new genre he has created, three-dimensional paintings.

Internationally collected local artist Ron Anderson, studied art at UCSB in the late 60’s and after travelling the world settled in Santa Barbara in 1982. He has surfed Rincon for nearly 50 years, designed a private collection of aloha shirts for Kahala, created the famous Mickey on the Road to Hana for Disney, did a CD cover for the Beach Boys and the SB Chamber of Commerce commissioned him to create a surfer/greeter for State Street in the 90′s. He’s been represented by galleries in California, Hawaii and Las Vegas; been in shows in NY, Chicago, Aspen, Houston and Miami; created art for six restaurants and for clients around the world. Among his local clients are Yvon Chouinard founder of Patagonia, Roger Nance owner of the Beach House, Jerry and Helene Beaver and Long Board Grill’s John Scott.

All You Really Need by Ron Anderson 36” x 30” x 3” 3D Painting

As with all Anderson Art Collective shows, Ron Anderson 20/20 will benefit a non-profit organization. Five percent of sales will be donated to Santa Barbara Channelkeeper (www.sbck.org) to support their work in protecting and restoring the Santa Barbara Channel.

“Ron Anderson started his journey as a professional artist when I was six years old and my brother Benjamin was fourteen,” recalls the artist’s son and Anderson Art Collective co-curator, Sean Anderson. “Now, more than twenty years later, we have seen the amazing scope of an artist who not only influenced us to take on art as a profession and lifestyle for ourselves but has touched the lives of thousands of collectors and admirers across the US, in Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia. We are honored and excited to curate a show that highlights the incredible work, process, and purpose of such an influential artist.

“This exhibition will transform the gallery, with an installation and a comprehensive representation of Ron’s work from the past to the present, as well as a taste of what’s to come. This show promises to be like nothing you have seen before in Santa Barbara.”

Anderson ART Collective is located at 410 Palm Avenue, Unit A2, in Carpinteria.  The gallery is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday from noon until 5pm or by appointment. The gallery features contemporary artwork and is a platform to promote the arts, to protect the environment and to support human rights.
