I suppose it is only natural that we go weeks without a big art event in town and then you have 20 in one week. This particular week is one of the latter, with the following two events on Wednesday. Then a great big holiday 1st Thursday the next day (more on that to come soon). And then Friday is Brad Nack’s annual Reindeer Show at Roy (more to come on that as well). Might I make a plea to those in control for spreading things out throughout the month, I’m just saying… I’d really like to make it to attend all these events (just look at these pots!), but a guy can only do so much.

ECAA AND CABANA HOME ANNOUNCES AN EXHIBITION OF NOTED POTTER:

Adam Silverman: New Pots

November 30, 2011 to January 14, 2012

Artist Talk and Opening Reception
to follow:

This Wednesday, November 30
6-8pm
CABANA HOME
Santa Barbara, CA 93101
111 Santa Barbara Street

Cabana Home, in collaboration with Edward Cella Art + Architecture, announces a solo exhibition for noted contemporary Los Angeles based potter, Adam Silverman. The exhibition presents a new collection of hand thrown pots with explosive, experimental glazes that epitomizes Silverman’s distinctive aesthetic connecting ancient and modern sensibilities.

The deceptively and modestly, self-described potter is widely recognized for his experimental glazes that are developed and refined through a series of extensive tests. Each pot is enveloped by richly glazed textures of ashy scars and mottled lava-like surfaces. In some cases, Silverman grinds down their surfaces to expose the bubbles and lacy patterns underneath revealing the chemical process of fire reacting to the minerality of the glazes and clay. This new body of work engages the viewer through an experimental journey of process and time, trekking through traditional and personal, improvisational techniques that are a counterpoint with the vessel’s highly considered, modernist inspired silhouettes. Each work bridges the past and present simultaneously in one artefact.

Trained as an architect, Silverman is currently the studio director of Heath Ceramics, a 62 year old California maker of dinnerware and tile. Just this fall alone, Silverman was engaged by the Santa Monica Museum of Art to design the installation for the retrospective of iconic Ojai resident and ceramicist, Beatrice Wood: Career Woman. Additionally, Silverman was commissioned by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art to create a limited edition, commemorative vessel celebrating the museum’s Pacific Standard Time exhibition California Design, 1930-1965: “Living in a Modern Way.”

I’m really looking forward to this clever exhibition. This is a really interesting and eclectic group of artists brought together not through academic theme or stylistic similarities, but by their commonality as artist married to artists. It will be exciting to see what curator Nancy Gifford (an excellent artist in her own right) brings from this group.

Come hang out at The Arts Fund in the Funk Zone this Saturday from 5 – 7. And might I suggest La Tour for after-reception drinks?

See you there.

Now there’s a post title that should get some attention…

This event is so exciting I almost didn’t want to post about it for fear of hurting my chances of getting some artwork by a great artist without breaking the bank. Seriously though, I would never do that. Art from Scrap is too wonderful an organization to hold back from helping them raise some money. And clearly I am not alone in thinking this, the list of artists who have signed up for this event range from national and international stars such as Yoko Ono (seriously?!?), and Jeff Bridges; local superstars like Penelope GottliebAnn Diener and John Nava; old favorites from the Haley Collective like Yoskay Yamamoto J. Shea9, Tanner Goldbeck, and Larry Mills; and up-and-comers like Inga Guzyte and Zack Paul. It would not be a stretch to say that nearly everyone I have ever written about on this blog will be part of this show. And then there are all the other great artists that I haven’t mentioned.

The deal is that you don’t know who has done each piece until you drop the $200 bucks to buy it. So it pays to do your homework if you want something by a particular artist. For $100 bucks you can get in the door at 6:30 to get first pick, or wait until 7pm and get in for $20. But if you are at all interested in any of these artists it would be silly to wait until 7. Getting a piece of art for $300 bucks from any of these artists is a steal, and you’re helping Art From Scrap to boot.

All the info is listed below, but if you haven’t checked out the artist list you can find it here.  And make a note that this show is not at Art From Scrap. It will be at the Brooks Institute’s Gallery 27 at 27 West Cota St.

See you there.

I can’t believe its been a year since the first “From Dusk ’til Drawn” show at the Contemporary Arts Forum. This is easily one of my favorite art events of the entire year. I love the camaraderie that develops as artists collectively embark on a 24 hour art-making marathon. And, I love the opportunity to get some really amazing art for really amazing prices. For those of you who didn’t make it last year, there are four walls in the space marked with four respective price points ($25, $75, $150, and $300). Art hung on each wall can be had for that price. Whoever’s idea that was, let me just say: “Brilliant, really brilliant.”

This year I think I’m going to stop by twice.  Once on Saturday evening and again for the closing reception. Not only will this let me see how an artists work morphs as exhaustion sets in, but it will also let me get in early to see what I might like to take home. For many of you this is a chance to get a piece of work by an artist you’ve always admired but may not have been able to afford. And it helps a great organization, so everybody wins.
