I’d like to thank J.Shea for taking the time to answer my questions and providing some background for what will certainly be one of the most exciting art events in town this year. This will make two great events in just two weeks from the good people at Art From Scrap. Well done.It is a bit short notice, but local artist (and my personal friend) Ethan Turpin, who has work featured in the show sent this letter to me, and I have to say it sounds pretty cool. As you may know Edward Cella used to have his gallery on Figueroa Street but moved down to LA a few months ago. I happen to have made a trip down to LACMA today which is right across from Cella’s new space. I didn’t have time to go in and look around, but I did pause to look in and the place looks great, a much larger gallery space than he had in Santa Barbara. So… if you happen to be in LA tomorrow or are looking for an excuse to get out of town, you might want to check this out.

Dear Friends and Patrons,
Edward Cella Art + Architecture would like to invite you to attend the Miracle Mile Art Walk, which takes place Saturday, July 18 from 5 to 9 p.m. The director, Edward Cella, will be giving an informal talk about the processes and backgrounds behind the current show, Transforming Photography at 7 p.m. In response to a strong interest, the exhibit has been extended through August 1, 2009.
This unique exhibition presents an inclusive selection of works that redefine the material nature of photography. At a time when the boundaries between artistic medias and traditionally held expectations of the nature of photography are in flux; Transforming Photography suggests alternatives to the commonplace manipulations offered through digital processes. The exhibition features visceral and process based photographic works by Isidro Blasco, Ben Dean, Mary Heebner, Gerald Incandela, George Legrady, Joni Sternbach, Joan Tanner, Ethan Turpin and Thomas Zika.

My friend Ethan Turpin gave me a heads up on a very cool art event that will be happening this weekend at Viva Workshop. The idea is that Ethan, Saul Grey-Hildenbrand, and a small group of local artist including Ulrike Kerber, Lyza Fontana, Meg Barbour, Johnny Troyna, and Deb Chaney are going get together at the Viva Workshop at 10am on Saturday and will spend the next 24 hours in an art production marathon working on individual pieces, collaborations, or whatever inspires them for the sake of art. Visitors will not be allowed during the Marathon itself, so don’t plan on crashing the event. However, they will be opening the studio at the conclusion of the event at 10am on Sunday the 25th for an informal unveiling of the results. I, for one, plan on showing up with coffee and tea for the participants and I’d love to see lots of people there to support them. If you can’t make it on Sunday, a formal opening will happen during the next First Thursday event on November 6th. Click on the press release below for full details. And you can check out the Viva Workshop blog here.
