First of all, I wanted to extend a personal congratulations to the ambitious young artists who put together the Young Folks Art Show this weekend. If you didn’t see this beautifully utilized space,  you really missed something special. The show was located in a bit of an out of the way location just of the corner of Chapala and Micheltorrena, in what appears from the front to be a fairly non-discript single story house with lots of windows. The space, however, was much larger and much more conducive to showing art than one could have imagined.  Once inside you were free to wander around the many multileveled rooms, which lead to a surprisingly large open room in the back with tons of natural light-perfect for showing art. Each of these rooms had been beautifully hung with paintings, constructs, and photos, amongst other artistic works. The house has apparently been up for rent for some time, and these industrious young folks worked out a deal to rent the space just for the weekend. A win-win for the artists and the owners and I’d like to salute them both for their intestinal fortitude. For more information on the artists that put this show together see my previous post.

Jimmy Bell Print FlierIn other exciting news, blog-favorite Jimmy Bell will be having a show at Muddy Waters in June. As a build up for this show, Jimmy has released his first limited edition print. They are an edition of 25, archival giclee prints. The print itself is 12×7 inches and matted to 14×11 inches and you can have your very own for just $25. Click on the image to the right to check out Jimmy’s website where you can order a print. Make sure to keep this show on your radar, and I’ll post the details as the opening reception approaches.

Finally, urban clothing boutique, Fuzion, recently made the move from upper to lower State Street and can now be found between Figueroa and Anapamu Streets in a deceivingly large space. I found myself drawn into the store by some very nice photographs hanging on the walls. Eventually, I found my way downstairs to what could accurately be called a cavernous space populated by a couple of sofas and some very cool graffiti art scattered here and there on the walls. The room was still in a period of transition while I was there and the potential of the space had not been realized, but that potential is HUGE. Between this space and the AG2 space that just opened up behind the French Press on the corner of Figueroa and State, this block has all of the sudden become a focal point of Santa Barbara’s New Art scene.  Make sure to stop by Fuzion to check out this space.

Here’s the shortlist of places not to miss tonight, which looks to be a beautiful evening despite the rainy forecast  just a day ago.

Firstly, Vanae Rivera will be having a solo show at 19 Blue (19 West Ortega). Vanae was the designer of the first Santa Barbara Arts Collaborative t-shirt and was a huge contributor to the Bar Napkin Biennale at Muddy Waters just a few weeks back.  I can’t say that I remember seeing a show at 19 Blue, but I am excited to see a new venue added to the First Thursday lineup. Vanae’s work is graphic, and street-inspired, and is the kind of edgy work that is all too hard to find in Santa Barbara, so make sure you don’t miss this show.

The other thing that should not be missed tonight is the Forum Lounge with Sanford Biggers at the Contemporary Arts Forum. This is a major event at CAF, and I have been been waiting for weeks for this event. The show starts at 7 tonight, so you’ll have plenty of time to check out your regular favorite First Thursday spots.

I believe that there are also a lot of street performances scheduled for tonight. And I’m sure there are a lot of other great places to check out tonight, so if you want to help get the word out about shows or events that I have missed, please help spread the word by posting a comment on this post.

Once again blog favorite, Ms. Andi Garcia, has put together a show of work by talented, young, up and coming artists who will be invading Elise’s Tavern for Santa Barbara’s upcoming First Thursday. With THREE after hours (anything open passed 8 pm is “after hours” on First Thursday) venues, we seem to be heading towards a critical mass of unusually edgy shows for this small, artistically conservative town.

If this is the kind of art you are into, it is absolutely critical that you go out and show your support for the hard working souls who bring this kind of art to Santa Barbara. Go out and look for something to fill that blank space on your wall. Or just go out with your friends, have some Agave Margaritas, and support the places that volunteer their wall space for you to enjoy.

Details of the Elsie’s event are below.

This is a unique presentation of Acrylic on Plexiglas by Frijol Boy / Juan Muniz of Las Vegas.
We will also have a life size UnValentines card for all to sign !

Amazing Live Art by  The red hot !!, Yuki Miyazaki

Elise's Pub hosts "A Very Merry Unvalentine's on First Thursday

In addition to the awesome goings on at the Presidio Motel on next week’s First Thursday, The Press Room will be hosting its first art event. This is another great addition to the First Thursday lineup, in large part because it will not shut down at 8pm, as most of the galleries do. It will also be a great place to see the kind of edgy, “low brow” art that is missing from the more conservative gallery scene. AND you can have a pint while you gaze at the walls. Personally, I am very curious and excited about the communal sketch book.  I’ve posted details below.

Art, Music, Chalk Monsters, and a pint. Sounds pretty sweet to me. Make sure to stop by and check it out next Thursday starting at 7pm.

Raph at the Helm of the Press RoomOn Thursday, February 4th, the Press Room Cocktail Pub will host its first ever art event. Set to commemorate the completion of the bar’s first communal sketch book, an ongoing experiment in collective art, the show will feature six local artists in a variety of mediums. The opening reception, which begins at seven, includes live music by the Kinsella Brothers as well as performance art by the Chalk Monsters.
