Now there’s a post title that should get some attention…

This event is so exciting I almost didn’t want to post about it for fear of hurting my chances of getting some artwork by a great artist without breaking the bank. Seriously though, I would never do that. Art from Scrap is too wonderful an organization to hold back from helping them raise some money. And clearly I am not alone in thinking this, the list of artists who have signed up for this event range from national and international stars such as Yoko Ono (seriously?!?), and Jeff Bridges; local superstars like Penelope GottliebAnn Diener and John Nava; old favorites from the Haley Collective like Yoskay Yamamoto J. Shea9, Tanner Goldbeck, and Larry Mills; and up-and-comers like Inga Guzyte and Zack Paul. It would not be a stretch to say that nearly everyone I have ever written about on this blog will be part of this show. And then there are all the other great artists that I haven’t mentioned.

The deal is that you don’t know who has done each piece until you drop the $200 bucks to buy it. So it pays to do your homework if you want something by a particular artist. For $100 bucks you can get in the door at 6:30 to get first pick, or wait until 7pm and get in for $20. But if you are at all interested in any of these artists it would be silly to wait until 7. Getting a piece of art for $300 bucks from any of these artists is a steal, and you’re helping Art From Scrap to boot.

All the info is listed below, but if you haven’t checked out the artist list you can find it here.  And make a note that this show is not at Art From Scrap. It will be at the Brooks Institute’s Gallery 27 at 27 West Cota St.

See you there.

This Friday there are two great art shows to check out. The best part is that the first one ends before the other one begins, so you don’t have to miss either of them. The first show stars perennial local favorite Rafael Perea de la Cabada. As most of you who read this blog will know, Rafael teaches art at SBCC. His art can be seen all over town, including the recent beautification of the sidewalk along Cabrillo Blvd near West Beach, but this is the first time in a little while that I remember an entire solo show of his work. I’ve also never been to the Architectural Foundation Gallery, so that will be a treat unto it self.

The second show this Friday is called Earth From Space, and it’s almost as though the show was specifically designed with me in mind. As you may have read recently, I am a sucker for the blending of science and art. This show features 40 local artists riffing off the first photo ever taken of the earth rising over the horizon from the surface of the moon. I can’t wait.

The details for both shows are below. I hope to see you out there.

Sometimes it feels like weeks between exciting art events in town. Other times there are so many that it is exhausting to try to hit them all. This Friday is the latter. I’m a big fan of photography, as it is the only sort of artistic creation that I dabble in myself. I’m really excited about this show, especially the late running time, since it will make it possible for me to check out some of the other great events earlier that night.

…“New Ideas In Photography”, is an exhibit of large format contemporary photography from four invited photographers. The show opens Friday, June 10th, with a late evening reception from 8:30 – 11:00 pm.

Erica Urech: Black and white images with a film noir ambiance produced using multi-layer imagery shot on film.

Holly Mackay: Santa Barbara mixed media artist Holly Mackay continues to work the line between pleasure and excess, attraction and repulsion, in her playful exploration of the American consumers appetite for stuff (in this case food), with this series of blown up 40×40” photographs of her small oil painting studies of doughnuts.

Adam Brown: Adam’s works are large scale, digital C prints, face mounted on luster plexi glass, and backed with aluminum diebond on a fabricated white lacquer panel. Adam was born in Santa Barbara, has lived throughout Europe and the Far East. He currently shares his time between Los Angeles and New York City. Adam Brown’s photography encompasses both spatial and peripheral viewpoints where the background becomes the subject. His work encompasses the subtle motion of nature, stirring memories to the surface and connecting to the unconscious mind of the viewer. The images playfully trick the mind into a game where perceived facts and poetic invention collide. For the viewer it becomes tangible that the place of perception is not just our eyes but our mind as well, which takes fragments from the world and constructs fictions that are neither real nor illusory, but both.

Matt Straka: Matt Straka is a Santa Barbara native who enjoys taking photographs of empty spaces, far out places, and hunting down a great bargain on chinos. Straka has been taking photographs around California wastelands for over 2 months now.

Michael Kate Interiors located at 132 Santa Barbara Street, is one of the largest art showcase spaces in Santa Barbara with 8,000 square feet and 25 foot walls.

The public is invited to visit Monday through Saturday 10 to 6. Sunday 11 to 5. Closed Wednesdays.

Reception for the artists, with refreshments and music.
